Friendship Friday~~Please Welcome Author, Nancy Gideon

Cover Art for Betrayed by Shadows by Nancy Gideon

I’ve known Nancy Gideon for. . .well not long enough. She is generous to a fault and one of the most kindly honest people I know. It is an honor and a pleasure to have her as my guest this week. She’ll tell us a little about herself and her latest book then follow up with hilarious answer to a few of those weird questions I like to ask my guests. Read all the way to the end of Nancy’s interview and you’ll find a short treat (I”m not telling). If you don’t know Nancy or haven’t read her books, you’ve got some terrific times ahead of you when you do. If you already know Nancy and/or her books, I don’t have to tell you how much fun she is to be around. Now, here’s Nancy.

Hi! I’m Nancy Gideon. I’m a writer.  I’m a Gemini. That pretty much says everything.  I can’t NOT write.  I love words and I love brainstorming plot ideas.  I was always trying to guess the end of books and movies growing up –  and in many cases came up with a better twist ending. I’m the ultimate multi-tasker (it’s that Gemini thing), thrive on chaos, but admit to control issues (ADD with OCD rising!). I was first published back in the ‘80s (yes, I’m an ‘80s lady!) and have sold over 54 books (and recently 4 more in reissues!) including historicals, contemporary suspense, dark paranormal and even a horror novelization as Dana Ransom, Rosalyn West and now under my own name.  Because writing doesn’t provide health insurance, I’ve worked as a legal assistant for the past 12 years in the same small firm going back to the 9-to-5 after a 15 year ‘real job’ hiatus to raise two boys.  I have a Netflix addiction and feed a menagerie of creature feathered and furred off my 4th floor apartment balcony. For more about me and my books, visit http://nancygideon.com or my blog at http://nancygideon.blogspot.com

I’ve got lots of launch party giveaways going on.

Please tell us about your most recent release.

Gladly!  BETRAYED BY SHADOWS, the 7th book in my “By Moonlight” dark paranormal series with Pocket Books is available on 12-17-12! That’s NEXT week!!  This is my first e-exclusive as part of Pocket’s new Star program and it’s tastily priced at $1.99 for the first four weeks before going up to the regular price of $5.99. You can pre-order at Amazon or Barnes & Noble  What’s it about? I’ll tell you in pictures and music in my book trailer.

I just turned in the next book in the series. PRINCE OF SHADOWS will be available on 5-27-13 – my birthday!

1. What would you want to be written on your tombstone?

“Here lies Nancy Gideon, skin and bones at last!”

2. Explain relativity.

What’s in it for me?

3. Who is the person you trust most?

Its persons.  My critique group. These fabulous ladies have seen me through all my major life dramas, both ups and downs.  They’re more than friends . . . they’re family.

4. What’s your favorite word?

If you’ve ever ridden in a car with me or bought me a drink (I’m not a big drinker!), you already know what it is. How ‘bout that drink and I’ll tell you all about it.

5. Who told you they loved you last?

My five-year-old grandson. I never get tired of hearing it.

6. Last furry thing you touched?

Thank goodness it wasn’t something in the back of the refrigerator!  It was Jasper.  He’s my new $800-in-dental-bills free cat. He’ll be working off his debt by being snugly for the next 8 to 10 years!

7. If you had to choose between a million bucks and being able to fly, which would you choose?

I’d take the money and pay someone else to do the flying so I could ride first class.  It’s all about those hot towels.

8. What is your guilty pleasure Disney movie?

“The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band” from 1968.  I fell madly in love with Kurt Russell’s singing and dancing! Still very fond of him to this day! Who knew a Disney boy would become such a badass?! Kurt, you aged well.

9. Do you have a secret talent and what is it?

I have a photographic memory that helps me be uber organized (which I have to have since I have ADD! Ooo, shiny!). I know where every file and piece of paper is in the office at any given time.  I’m the go-to person for setting up meal reservations and daytrips on vacations and conferences. I live to make lists! And check them twice.

10. What is one unique thing are you afraid of?

Things that aren’t in their proper order (see above!). . . you know, cupboard doors half open, spoons and forks co-mingling, patterned towels hung wrong side out, mail or money not all facing the same direction, M&Ms not sorted by color and number, anything on my desk that’s been moved since I last sat there. Freaks me right out.  OCD much?

11. You have the opportunity to sleep with the movie-celebrity of your choice. Who would it be?

I would do Jeremy Renner in a heartbeat! Poor guy is probably hiring extra security right now! I can hear my son – “No, Mom, they don’t have a life-sized Hawkeye figure with removal clothing!” Too bad. That’d be on my couch watching Netflix with me and son would be out the door!

12. What is your favorite expletive?

Didn’t I already answer this f-ing question? Oh, sorry, that was favorite word. My bad.

13. Your house is on fire! You have just enough time to run in there and grab ONE inanimate object. Don’t worry, your loved ones and pets have already made it out safely. So what’s the one thing you’re going to save from that blazing inferno?

My laptop . . . duh!  My entire life is on that hard drive. Stuff can be replaced. Ideas and memories can’t be.

14. You accidentally eat some radioactive vegetables. They were good, and what’s even cooler is that they endow you with the super-power of your choice! What’s it gonna be?

It’s always good to get some benefit from vegetables . . . I’d like the ability to clone myself so part of me could sleep in instead of getting up at 5:00 a.m. to write. And so I could send the clone to work for me on those icy winter mornings in Michigan.

Extra Treat for all who read this far, the blurb for Nancy’s newest release, Betrayed by Shadows.

2. Please tell us about your most recent release:  My most recent release will be this coming November 15th from eXtasy Romance.  Flavorful Seductions is book six in The Zodiac Club series. Kate Carlisle needs every ounce of courage she can muster if she has any hope of keeping her catering business Sinful Sweets afloat.  But when business mogul Adam Belfour is in desperate need of her culinary skills, it’s all Kate can do to keep her mind off his sexy physique and on whipping up decadent desserts in order to seal the deal.

3. What cd is in your cd-player right now?  Carrie Underwood Blown Away

4. How much do you use ketchup? (1 – not at all, 5 – on all foods)  That’s a ‘5’.  I love ketchup on pretty much everything.

5. Are you a “dogperson” or a “catperson”?  Definitely a dog person (she says looking at her sleeping little cockapoo-westie mix Sophie Bean.)  But we also have a cat who believe he’s a dog in the house.  Good old Ace.

6. What’s the size of your shoes?   8.5

7. What would you want to be written on your tombstone?  That I loved well and lived well.

8. Is your middle finger longer than your ring finger?  Nope, not even close

9. The person you would never want to meet?   Freddy Kruger!  I hate scary movies.

10. Do you like carrots?  Ha, this is a good one.  I love raw carrots, but loathe cooked ones.  How weird is that?

11. What’s your favorite word?  Poopy-squats.  I have no idea where it came from, but it’s my word of choice instead of saying a swear word when things don’t go right.

12. When you looked in the mirror first thing this morning, what was the first thing you thought?  Crap, I look like my mother (G).

13. The last song you listened to?  On The Pontoon by Little Big Town on Dancing With The Stars

15. You just got a free plane ticket to anywhere. You have to depart right now. Where are you gonna go?   I would go to Hawaii. It’s a place I’ve always wanted to visit.

16. An angel appears out of Heaven and offers you a lifetime supply of the alcoholic beverage of your choice. “Be brand-specific” it says. Man! What are you gonna say about that? Even if you don’t drink booze there’s something you can figure out… so what’s it gonna be?  That’s easy, being a non-drinker, I’m picking Pepsi

17. Your house is on fire! You have just enough time to run in there and grab ONE inanimate object. Don’t worry, your loved ones and pets have already made it out safely. So what’s the one thing you’re going to save from that blazing inferno?  I have an afghan that I made when I first learned how to crochet.  It’s pretty raggy, but I’ve had it for over 30 years, so that’s what I’m grabbing.

18. You can erase any horrible experience from your past. What will it be?  My gut instinct is to say my adventure with colon cancer.  But after thinking about it for a minute, there are so many things I learned during that time, that I don’t think I would erase what I went through.

Please welcome Kristi Knight to Friendship Friday

My friend Kristi Knight is the author of scintillating romances.  I love her books, so I’m thrilled to have her on the blog this week.  I’ve asked Kristi to tell us a little bit about herself and her latest release.  After that, she’ll run the weird question gauntlet, so make sure you scroll down.  Who knows, if you meet Kristi, you may be the only one who knows her toothbrush secret.  Now, here’s Kristi.

Romance, Author, Kristi Knight, Friend, Rue Allyn, Novel, book, writer

Author, Kristi Knight

Hi, everyone! I’m Kristina. I’m a Midwestern girl, married to The Best Husband Evah for the past 13 years; we have a daughter (she’s 4 and is the Queen Bee most days). I write contemporary romances about finding acceptance and home – because I think we all deserve those things.  If you want to know more about me and my books please visit me on facebook, or read this short bio.  Once upon a time, Kristina Knight spent her days running from car crash to fire to meetings with local police – no, she wasn’t a trouble-maker she was a journalist. When the opportunity to write what she wanted – business and family/parenting articles – and to focus more energy on the stories in her head, she jumped at it. And she’s never looked back. Now she writes articles for magazines and such by day and writes romance novels with spice by night and during any toddler-free, five minute break she has. She lives on Lake Erie with her husband and 4 year old daughter. Happily ever after.Saint, Devilish, Deal, Mexico, Romance, Novel, Book, Writer, Friend, Kristie Knight, Rue Allyn

My latest release The Saint’s Devilish Dealis a contemporary, reunion romance set in Puerto Vallarta – one of my favorite places in the world. Saint and Esme have a past they need to deal with to begin building the present they both want. And there’s sex.

Esmerelda Quinn has been looking for a place to belong since her parents were killed in a car crash when she was young. The closest thing to home has always been Aunt Constance’s villa in Puerto Vallarta, so after a string of dead-end hotellier jobs, she’s coming home to run the villa.

Santiago Cruz has called the villa home for as long as he can remember. In between surfing events, Constance has always had a room for him. Color him surprised when Constance decides to retire – and leaves a joint interest in the villa to both Santiago and Esme.

Esme isn’t thrilled to share ownership of the villa with the the youngest Cruz brother – especially when she learns Santiago’s brother has been after the villa for years. But Santiago has grown up while she’s been away at school and soon she finds herself falling for the rich boy down the hall.

This book is too yummy for words.  If you want a copy click here: Amazon, iTunes, or Barnes & Noble.

Kristi’s Answers to Some Weird Questions

1. What’s the color of your toothbrush? – It’s purple with automatic pulsating action. My teeth love it…but it’s almost time for a new one. Who knows what the next color will be.

2. Are you left or right eyed? – Left. Which is weird because I’m right-handed.

3. What cd is in your cd-player right now? – I just searched my house. We’re officially CD-Player-Less. I did find about 12 boxes of CDs in my husband’s closet, though. If it counts, my iPod is playing Lady Antebellum.

4. What does a light year mean? – a year in which my pants size goes down. J

5. What’s the meaning of life? – Good friends, good food, good books, good experiences.

Friendship Friday, Please Welcome Friend and Fellow Author, Patricia Rasey

Forging Friendships and the Journey of Writing.

I’ve been writing some twenty years now…well, at least on a serious note. I could also say I’ve been writing as long as I can remember. In the early days of writing, I would sit at my computer—peck away at the keys and just write. I had no professional background, no one to steer me any direction. I had no idea what to do or where I was going. I just knew I wanted to write and to tell stories.

I finished that first book in less than a year. It was incredibly long as I had no idea what word count to even aim for. So now that I was done?  What to do next came to mind. I started researching publishers and agents and how to query them as I started book two. I really was naïve back in the day to even think that first book was anywhere near ready for publication…nor did I have anyone to talk to about it.

I sent query after query out and received countless rejections. What was I doing wrong?

A friend had overheard on the radio about a writer’s convention going on in Detroit and thought I might be interested. Well, of course I was. So nervous as could be, now two completed books under my belt and working on the third—I headed off to my first writer’s convention. What I found is I was not alone. I met a good friend at that convention and years later—we remain great friends. We became critique partners, and a shoulder to lean on as the years went by and the publishing contracts did not come. And later—someone to celebrate with when the call finally came.

I joined a local chapter of Romance Writers of America. I made more friends, and at one such meeting I met Rue Allyn. Over the years, we attended conventions together, roomed together and made new friends along the way. I look back over the years with great fondness at the fun we shared, the heartaches, the love.

You see, I found one of the most important things you find as a writer, is like-minded friends. You can’t talk about your craft with your family. Their eyes will glass over before you ever hash out your plot. They won’t offer constructive criticism…no, they’ll just tell you how great the idea is—even if it does suck. But a fellow writer? They will be honest, tell you if your plot has holes, and let you know if it needs improved upon. They’ll push you when you are ready to quit, motivate you to open your laptop and keep going. Because without persistence, you may never see success.

Now, twenty years down that long road, I look back at all the friendships I have made along the way and cherish them, thank them for coming into my life, and believe that I am still writing because of them. If you are in the beginning of your journey as a writer—reach out to fellow writers. You will be glad you did.

It’s been a few months since Jaycen McCain’s troubled wife fell victim to a sadistic killer. Losing Kelly Jo has haunted him deeply, and his failure to keep her safe has driven Jay to the brink of a bleak, self-destructive despair. But the small-town police detective has bigger problems to deal with when a string of serial murders crop up on his home turf–murders with eerie similarities to the violence perpetrated on his wife.

Compelled to stop the killer and find much-needed answers about Kelly Jo’s final hours, Jay is forced to enlist the help of a woman too tempting for his own peace of mind: Kelly Jo’s pretty cousin, Sara St. James. Together, Jay and Sara embark on a pursuit for justice that will take them into an underground world of dark places and dangerous, irresistible desires. As an unwanted passion kindles and combusts between them, the killer closes in, pulling Jay and Sara into the web of an evil that will rock them to their core.

Excerpt:

~Maybe Sara had been correct and he should have brought her along. At least then he might have been able to feign being a part of the group as he and Sara looked like an experimental couple and not just some horny guy who came to leer.

He turned a corner, leaving the two men to their groping and caught sight of Dax, dressed in knee-high black boots and clinging leather pants. Hell, the man looked damn near seven feet tall in his platforms. On top, he wore nothing aside from leather gloves reaching to his elbows and a pair of nipple rings. Long black hair cascaded past his shoulders, appearing blue-black in the lighting. Even Jaycen could see the appeal he had for women. The man looked like a modern day pirate.

As if sensing Jaycen’s attention, Dax turned, and the two faced off. A sneer turned up his lip. “Do I need to fear you running off with my date again?”

Before Jaycen had time to contemplate his meaning, Sara stepped from the ladies’ room and slipped her arm around Dax’s back, toying with the hair feathering past his shoulders. Her gaze landed briefly on Jaycen’s, her acting skills obviously more polished than his. Just her appearance had him stumbling back. She looked damn sexy in a black leather, thigh-high thong teddy that cinched her tiny waist and arrowed into the low riding band of her washed out jeans, exposing not only a good deal of bare hip, but also cleavage.

His mouth dehydrated.

Anger quickly replaced the raw sensuality welling in his gut and stealing his breath. He wanted to give Dax the beating he no doubt deserved, then toss Sara over his shoulder and carry her from the room. He should throttle her for disobeying his order to stay the hell away from the fetish ball. The last thing he needed was to baby-sit her when he had a job to do. He certainly couldn’t trust Dax to look after her. Not unless he wanted Dax taking care of Sara the way he had Kelly Jo.

“She’s all yours,” Jaycen clipped, barely controlling the roiling rage. He’d have to keep an eye on Sara from a distance and play the hand she’d dealt him. “If you two will excuse me.”

Jaycen walked away, angry at Sara for coming here with Dax and angry with himself for not realizing she would have come with or without him. He leaned against a neon decorated bar, attempting to suck in much needed fresh air. Christ, Sara had a hold of his balls, but he’d be damned if he’d admit as much.
